5 Tips To A Successful Garage Clean Out

The garage shouldn’t be a space where junk is left to accumulate and be forgotten. There are so many ways to put this space to good use and it goes beyond just storing your car. It can be a workshop, a workout area or somewhere to do work on your bike and car. With so much potential, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t make cleaning out the garage your next home improvement project.

But if you haven’t been tending to your garage on a regular basis, you could be in for a big job. It’s not easy to get rid of all the years’ worth of stuff that has been accumulating in there. Make sure that this winter your garage will have a cozy spot for your vehicle to reside.

Use these 5 tips and make your garage clean out a success!

1. Purge The Junk
Dive in and assess the damage, eliminating items as you go. This is a great way to weed through the obvious unwanted items immediately, leaving you a smaller pile to finalize. You will also be able to gage just how much work you have ahead for yourself.

2. Rent A Dumpster
Most likely you are like the rest of us, and greatly underestimate just how much clutter you have accumulated in your home or garage. A dumpster is an amazing asset to have onsite during a clean out. It takes the hassle out of worrying about just what to do with all those unwanted items you have been sorting through and are now piling up in your driveway. And if cost is an issue, go in on one with your neighbors. Sharing the cost while all being able to finally get rid of unwanted items will benefit everyone.
We have you covered! Give us a call at Bin There Dump That, and we will be happy to talk about your project at hand and provide you with the ideal size bin.

3. Sell Or Donate Your Unwanted Items
Many of your items don't necessarily have to be destined for a dumpster. It just takes a little extra work to find them a new home. Donating items to a local goodwill store is a great way to contribute while reducing your clutter pile. If you're looking to make a return on your clutter, having a yard sale or consigning your items are good ideas.

4. Rethink You Space
With your donate pile overflowing and your dumpster filled to the brim (hopefully a residential friendly Bin There Dump That bin), the question then becomes, what do you want to use this space for? I'm guessing that parking will be high on the list, especially because this most likely hasn't been an option for a while. You might also want to use this space as storage for holiday decorations or even a new workout area. Divide your garage into zones and make sure that each want has a designated area.

5. Be Smart About Storage
Avoid storing any items on the garage floor. This will allow for easy sweeping, and will also prevent the slow creep of returned clutter. Vertical storage is recommend. The less often a category is used, the higher up it should be stored. Try to avoid storing items in cardboard boxes, as this seems to be the preferred nesting material for rodents. Instead, use plastic containers. You can color coordinate based on individual categories and label them, or use clear plastic containers so you can easily identify each one's contents.

Good luck and make sure to give Bin There Dump That a call. We are happy to answer any questions, recommend an ideal bin size, and schedule your dumpster rental to get your clean out going!

5 Roll-Off Dumpster Rental Tips To Avoid Property Damage

So you've decided to clean house. To finally get rid of all the accumulated clutter around the house that has slowly taken over, or all of those unnecessary items you've held onto but never used.
We at Bin There Dump That Wachusett Area can help! We provide hassle-free residential friendly roll-off dumpster rentals. Our uniformed drivers are skilled, professional, and approachable when it comes to any questions you may have, or even to show you how to use the accessible double back doors on our bins that make for a smooth loading process. Last but not least, we provide a property protection guarantee with every rental.  Protective boards are placed under every rental prior to placement of the bin, to ensure the safety of your driveway, or any surface of your property that our bin is placed on.

Here are five tips for maximizing your dumpster rental experience, and avoiding property damage all together.

1. Find The Perfect Parking Spot (For Your Dumpster Rental)
Deciding where your dumpster is placed plays a huge role in how efficiently it's used.  It's best to place them on a solid, flat surface, most driveways are ideal. Steer away from soft ground locations, like lawns, that can increase the likelihood of sinking or damaging impressions.
When using your driveway, keep a few things in mind when deciding the bin's placement:

  • Is there enough room in the driveway to come & go with your car? (Bin There Dump That bins are about the size of a minivan.
  • Are you blocking any doors?
  • Is there enough room at the walk-in end of the dumpster for easy entry?

When a Bin There Dump That driver arrives at your home, prior to placement of the bin, protective boards are placed under every rental to disperse it's weight evenly and keep your driveway scratch-free.

2. Create A Path Of Least Resistance
During your project, what will be the easiest, or most traveled route to and from your bin? With a little foresight, tramping through you flowerbed to get an item into the dumpster can be avoided.  And if crossing your lawn is unavoidable, place sheets of plywood down along the path to cut down on damage.

3. Keep Out Hazardous Liquids
When you rent a dumpster, it's designed to take almost anything you're in need to getting rid of, except hazardous materials. From motor oil and gasoline to household cleaning chemicals and pesticides, it's best to check with your city for it's hazardous waste collection procedures. A great online source is a website earth911.com. Simply type in what material it is that you're are looking to dispose of along with your location, and you will be provided with various options for your area.

4. Loading: Don't Top Off Your Tank
Our residential friendly roll off dumpsters allow for walk-in loading, but once things start to fill up, it's important to make sure that the bin door is securely closed. As you continue loading, a good stopping point will be when your discarded materials are flush with the top of the container. Level loading your bin will help our uniformed drivers to tarp and secure your bin for it's safe travel to be sorted and recycled at a local transfer station.

5. Sweep Up Afterwards
Once all of the hard work and heavy lifting is over, we will be out to as scheduled to pick up your bin. But, before we drive off, part of our property protection system is a sweep u of the area to make sure no debris are left behind. The last thing you want is to run over astray nail while pulling into your driveway. Sweeping will round up any rogue nails, scraps of wood, pieces of glass or chips of paint.

Property protection should play a key role when it comes to renting a dumpster. When renting a dumpster you don't want to have to worry about the possibility of any damage to your property, especially if the company you have chose isn't covered for it.

Give us a call or check us out online for your next project!

Question Of The Week: What Does Level Load Mean?

Recently one of our customers asked this great question: What does it mean when you say the bin needs to be level loaded?

Well, there is a sign on every bin that reads LEVEL LOAD ONLY.  Although it sounds like you should evenly distribute the weight of materials in the bin, which you should try to do, it actually means that you should not overload the bin above the top.  Every bin has to be tarped and driven down the road, and regulations require that nothing protrudes above the top of the dumpster.

Knowing which size bin you will need for your project will play a key part in being able to load it appropriately. This is where our questions come in. When calling to schedule a residential friendly Bin There Dump That bin, we will ask lots of them. We want to make sure that we deliver the ideal size bin for your materials. Our knowledgable team is happy to suggest options and answer any questions you may have.

Give us a call for your next project and experience a residential friendly, hassle-free Bin There Dump That rental!

If you're in the area, stop by our office located on 24 Mass Ave., in Lunenburg and meet the team.

Thanks for reading and please feel free to contact us with any questions or if you would like to schedule a rental.

Declutter Your Home Fast: Our Top Clutter Busters

Do you remember when you first moved into your home?  How spacious and empty it looked, a blank canvas full of possibilities.  Then the clutter came.  And your blank canvas became more crowded and cramped with each passing year.  Where did all that space go?
Did you know, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, 32 percent of people with two-car garages are only able to park one car inside due to clutter?  And the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) says 80 percent of what we keep we never actually use.  Crazy, right?  Well, here are some tips to help you beat these statistics.

Wonder How To Declutter Fast?
Clutter has a way of sneaking up on us, and whether you plan on making it a part of you New Year's resolution or maybe just want to get a beat on spring cleaning, a clutter free home is within reach. Here are four can't miss way to make it a reality.

Getting Started Is Half The Battle
A cluttered home or garage can seem daunting at first, and even just taking the first step to getting started clearing it might feel terribly overwhelming.  Don't be your own roadblock.  Pick one room, break it up into sections, and work through one section at a time.  This will give you results you can actually see.
Pace yourself while you're at it.  These tips will help you declutter fast, but it's not a race.  Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither was a accumulation of clutter you've built up around your home.  To improve the organization of what goes and what stays, try to keep your items separated into three categories: trash, donate, and keep.
If the trash pile turns into a bit more than you bargained for, we can help!

Sentimental Value Doesn't Make It An Automatic Keeper
The majority of us like to keep items that remind us of loved ones, significant milestones, and past treasured memories.  It's part of what makes us human.  Sorting through such items can be a difficult task.  Take a trip down memory lane and try to pare down these items one box of nostalgia at a time.

Donate Now And Donate Often To Declutter Your Home Fast
What's that old saying, "One person's clutter is another person's thrift store jackpot?" Something along those lines.  If you have a box of items ready to donate, put it in your car now. The next time you're out, you'll have a box of donations riding shotgun. It's the perfect reminder to make a quick stop at your local donation center or charitable drop-box while your out and about.

Get Paid To Reduce Clutter In Your Home
From old sporting equipment to used furniture items, and even clothing, there's a good chance pieces and parts of your clutter could make you a little money.  Internet resale sites and consignment boutiques are a great resource when it comes to relieving clutter or unwanted items around the house.  The best part is, a financial return while simultaneously cleaning house.

Using these tips as a starting points will help you on your road to a successfully decluttered home!

And for all those items that end up in the trash pile, give us a call.  We will be happy to discuss your project, and recommend the best bin size that will be ideal for getting rid of all those leftover unwanted items.

3 Ways Bin There Dump That Can Save Time And Money

So you've identified that your project, whether it's decluttering the house or a home renovation, like installing a new roof, will require a dumpster rental afterwards.  Now it's our part to provide you with the ultimate hassle-free residential friendly dumpster rental experience.

With that in mind, here are three tips to make your project as efficient and easy as possible:

Roofing Clean Up Made Easier

Placement of a bin can be more important than you might think.  One of the many things that sets  Bin There Dump That apart from the others is our residential friendly equipment.  We pride ourselves in being able to provide our customers with a hassle-free experience, especially when it comes to loading up our bins.  Our residential friendly equipment allows us to be able to place the bins conveniently close to your project at hand.  We are also able to fit down narrow streets and driveways.
Placement of our bins, no matter how tight the space, is vital when stripping or re-doing a roof.  By placing the bin snug up against your garage or home, you and your contracted roofer can easily discard debris collected on the roof by conveniently sweeping them into the Bin There Dump That bin below.  This makes our bins optimal for your roofing projects.  Also, once the job is done and the bin is loaded onto the truck, we will sweep up the area to make sure no stray nails are left lingering around.

Rent A Dumpster With Your Neighbors

Strive to make your bin rental experience as cost-effective as possible.  If you notice a neighbor that has collected items in their garage or is close to completing a home renovation, invite them to chip in on your bin rental.  This may spur more activity with surrounding neighbors, and you may find several neighbors who want to participate.  This is a great way for everyone to get rid of unwanted items at a shared cost.

Maximize Your Dumpster Space

No matter how big or small your project, from 4 yards to 20 yards, we have the right size bin for it. That being said, it's best to maximize your space accordingly.  Larger items should be placed snug up against the walls of the bin.  These larger items may consist of furniture and appliances.  It's advocated to be strategical in the loading of your bin.  Properly loading your dumpster rental can save you time and money in having to rent a second one.  We want to make sure, just as you do, that all those unwanted items will fit properly into our residential friendly bins and off your toss list.

With these helpful tips in mind, feel free to give us a call or contact us online with any questions you may have, or if you would like to schedule a reservation on a rental for your upcoming project!

Also, visitors are always welcome to stop in and visit us at our new office located on 24 Massachusetts Ave., in Lunenburg.  Come meet the team and lets talk about your next project!

Need A Dumpster? These 4 Spring Projects Say You Do

Ah, Spring! The time of year when you spend your freetime and weekends outdoors enjoying the beautiful weather. A time when backyard get-togethers include cookouts and laughs around a toasty evening fire.
Unfortunately, the reality is that your house and yard are probably a mess from the winter months of neglect and pure avoidance. Tackling some much needed spring cleaning inside as well as sprucing up your outdoor space become top priorities on your seemingly neverending to-do list. A dumpster is a key piece in accomplishing a well thought out plan to getting yourself organized and spring ready! Here's some inspiration...

Spring Cleaning
Yes, this is a thing. Not just an empty phrase thrown out there to describe an imaginary precursor to the wonderful season. Before you can tackle the actual scrubbing of corners, you have to first clear out. Start with kitchen cupboards. Take each item out, give it a good hard stare and ask yourself if you really use it or ever will. Say goodbye to that oversized, dusty kitchen appliance that you had such good intentions to use. Hit the bathroom. Purge the beauty products that have gathered dust for a year. Toss out old cosmetics, broken toys, old mops, ratty rugs, the list goes on! Spring is a time to purge, purge, purge. Into the dumpster they go.

Inspect The Outside Of Your Home
Winter may have beat up on your home a bit. Time to take a walk around outside for a spring inspection. Inspect your roof for any loose, missing or damaged shingles. Check the yard for any damaged shingles that may have fallen. Inspect your wood fencing and remove any rotted or damaged portions. Check your wooden steps and decking for any cracks, rotting boards or places where nails have popped up. Clean out the debris from your gutters and make any needed repairs.

Clean Up The Yard
Everything looks so pretty under blankets of freshly fallen snow. One of the best things about winter is the excuse to completely ignore any yard work.  Well, guess what? The snow is gone, and the time is now! Decaying leaves you never got around to raking, fallen limbs from that big storm, and trash that blew in from who knows where. Our 4yd bin is the perfect fit for a yard clean up!

Clean Out The Garage

If you're looking to use your garage this summer for housing that lawn mower or those beach toys, you'd better get going on clearing it out. What to toss? Broken outdoor toys, rusty, wobbly, old lawn furniture, or really any underused item that has been taking up space indefinitely in your garage. One thing to note: you can toss almost anything in a Bin There Dump That dumpster - except for liquids or hazardous waste. So please, no motor oil, gasoline, paint, household cleaning chemicals or pesticides.
Once you've got a good handle on what goes and what stays, it's time to organize. Utilize the walls! With the right shelves and hooks, you can actually double your storage space and have a perfectly organized garage. Being able to find what you're looking for, when you need it, is almost as great as having enough open space to actually store it.

Time To Rent A Dumpster
When you're ready to tackle your spring cleaning chores, Bin There Dump That will be ready too! (Actually, we're always ready. You're the one procrastinating.)
Our residential friendly bins snug up conveniently in your driveway so you'll only have to walk a few steps to load all of your unwanted items. And don't worry about heaving that old lawn furniture over the side of the bin. Walk right in through our easy access double doors. Not every dumpster company offers this back-saving feature. We do!
We also provide our guaranteed property protection system with every rental. Our operators place protective boards under every bin prior to placement. This helps to distribute the weight of the bin evenly while also protecting your driveway from any scratches or gouges.

Give us a call or contact us online for more information or to schedule a reservation on a bin for your next project.

Dumpster Rental Comparison: What Makes Bin There Dump That Different?

Trying to compare dumpster companies? Here are 9 ways Bin There Dump That is different from your average dumpster rental company.

1. Real People Answer The Phone-
When you call your local Bin There Dump That to arrange a bin rental, you will speak with a local franchise operator, not an automated system.  And the professional and friendly communication continues throughout your experience.

Questions along the way? Just ask. We are always happy to answer any and all questions you may have to make your experience the best it can be.  Expect questions from us too.  A good dumpster rental company asks plenty of questions about your needs and your project to help you decide on the best size bin.

2. Easy Access Walk-In Doors-
All of our bins have double back doors that easily open and latch for convenient walk-in loading.  You won't fully appreciate this feature until you're grunting your way to your dumpster rental, lugging that old basement couch out for it's final goodbye.
Heave it up over the side of the bin? That's preposterous. Walk right in, through our easy-access double doors. Not every dumpster company offers this back-saving feature. You can count on it here!

3. No Hidden Fees-
Some companies include hidden charges that customers don't discover until it's too late.
Bin There Dump That has no hidden fees. You'll know up front exactly what you'll pay for the service we provide. The commitment of up-front pricing is very important to Bin There Dump That.

4. Our Bins Fit Right In-
Bin There Dump That bins are driveway friendly, and designed for homeowners. That means they tuck right up in your driveway near your house, for convenient loading and accessibility. We can fit into narrow streets and driveways with ease. Chances are, you can still park your car in your garage while the bin is there.

5. We Sweep Up-
Your dumpster is loaded with all that unwanted clutter and the driver is ready to haul it away. Mission accomplished! But first, our drivers grab a broom and give your driveway a thorough sweep so you don't have to worry about any stray nails, glass shards or scraps of wood sneaking into your lawn, getting stuck in a tire or puncturing your barefoot.
You'll also notice that on pick up your bin will be securely covered with a tarp to be transported for disposal, so that debris will stay safely contained within the bin until it reaches it's final destination.

6. You're Property Is Safe With Us-
At Bin There Dump That we care about your property and there's no reason you should have any damage as a result of a dumpster rental. That's where our property protection system comes into place. Our operators place protective wooden boards down prior to placement of the dumpster. This ensures that the bin never touches the surface of your property. It helps to distribute the weight of the bin evenly and protects your driveway from any scratches or gouges.

7. Contents Are Promptly Delivered To A Transfer Station-
When it comes time to say goodbye to your dumpster, the contents you've discarded are taken directly to a transfer station where it will be properly RECYCLED.

8. Need A Bin Last Minute? Just Ask-
If you need a bin last minute, give us a call. If we can, we will accommodate same-day delivery requests.  But if possible, we usually ask for some notice. This way we can make sure to get you the appropriate size bin for the desired schedule to fit your project's needs.

9. Our Bins Are Practically Pretty-
You don't want a huge, rusty, smelly old dumpster in your driveway.  Bin There Dump That bins are clean and professional. And, we have clean, professional, courteous drivers to match.

So give us a call for your next project and enjoy the Bin There Dump That hassle-free dumpster rental experience!

The Most Common Dumpster Rental Mistakes Homeowners Make

Mistakes. We all make them. And then we make them some more.
Don’t worry, we won’t go into great detail about that perm you got in the 80's or the time you thought for sure the garage door was all the way up before you drove in.
We like looking out for you. So take a look at these common mistakes homeowners make when renting a dumpster.

Tossing Hazardous Materials Into The Dumpster
You can toss almost anything in a Bin There Dump That dumpster, but there are a few exceptions. Hazardous material is a big one.
A few examples are:

  • gasoline
  • motor oil
  • cleaning chemicals or pesticides
  • paint

Please be sure to check with your local Bin There Dump That operator for the restrictions in your area, then dispose of those items properly.

Creating A Road Block For Yourself
The great thing about our residential friendly Bin There Dump That dumpsters is how they can be placed close to your home, snugly into narrow driveways, or conveniently close to your project at hand. They're about the size of a minivan.
But there are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to placement before the bin arrives to ensure that everything goes as smooth as possible.
Some questions to keep in mind before delivery of the dumpster would be:
  • Is there enough room in the driveway to come and go with your car?
  • Are you blocking any doors?
  • Will there be enough room at the walk-in end of the dumpster to utilize the double doors on the bin? (This is especially important if you are loading heavy, bulky items that would be too difficult to toss over the top of the dumpster.)
All of our Bin There Dump That drivers are happy to provide suggestions for on site placement that will best meet your project's needs.

Property Damage
Again, try to think ahead. During your cleanout project, what will be the most traveled route to and from your dumpster rental? Be sure that route won't be over your flower bed or newly planted lawn.
No need to worry about the bin itself causing damage, when a Bin There Dump That driver arrives at your home, they place protective boards beneath the bin to evenly disperse it's weight and protect your driveway and all surfaces of your property.
Another great benefit of a Bin There Dump That dumpster rental is that on pick up, our drivers will sweep up once the bin has been tarped and loaded onto the truck to make sure there is no debris left behind once your project is finished. Our goal is to leave your property clean and damage free after every Bin There Dump That rental.

Renting The Bagster First
We know you have choices when it comes to picking a dumpster rental company.  If you’re trying to decide between Waste Management's Bagster vs.a dumpster rental from Bin There Dump That, there are some differences to consider.
Bin There Dump That dumpsters come in a variety of sizes, from 4-yard bins to 20-yard bins. Not sure what size you need? Your franchise operator is happy to talk you through it.
The Bagster is available in one size, with a 3 cubic yard capacity. It’s designed for smaller jobs like garage, attic or yard clean-outs.
The Bagster is a tarp-like material with handles. To help the bag keep its rectangular shape, you have to lay  items down flat and not pile debris above the edges.
A dumpster is heavy-duty metal, allowing you to throw or carry items into the bin. Pile away!
A Bin There Dump That operator will leave the rental in a convenient location on your property and it will be promptly picked up at it's scheduled time.
Since the Bagster is picked up by a crane on the Waste Management truck, there are some placement restrictions. The bag must be 5 feet away from structures or vehicles, have at least 18 feet of vertical clearance and be clear of overhead wires, trees or structures.
Just some great food for thought!

Misjudging Timing
A dumpster should be in your driveway for as long as you need it — but not much longer. While Bin There Dump That dumpsters are clean, well-maintained and pretty dapper, for dumpsters, we wouldn’t call them decor. When you’re done, you want it gone. No problem!
When you call to book your dumpster rental delivery, discuss your project with the franchise operator, who can help you figure out how long you will need.
If you realize you need the dumpster longer than expected, be sure to let us know right awa —  Chances are, that dumpster has another hot date scheduled.

Not Preparing The Site
If you're renting a dumpster, you probably have a decent size job ahead of you.  You want the quality time you'll spend with your dumpster on site to be productive. Don't forget to do some prep work.
First, consolidate your junk. We promise we haven't been watching you, but we're pretty sure it's all over your house. From the attic to the basement and that spare bedroom in between.
Before your dumpster arrives, corral all that stuff into one convenient spot, close to where your dumpster will be placed. A head start is always a great start.

Make No Mistake - Rent A Bin There Dump That Dumpster
Now you have an idea as to what NOT to do when it's time to rent a dumpster. An informed renter is a happier one!
Bin There Dump That operators strive to make the entire rental experience worry free, from careful placement of the bin to carefree pick up when you're done.
We place protective boards under every bin so it never actually touches the ground. We even sweep up any mess before we leave. The peace of mind comes free of charge!

When it comes time to tackle that project or pitch your debris, give us a call or contact us online and let's get the job done together!

Simple Home Repairs To Lift You Out Of The Winter Funk

Does Winter's Doldrums Have You Down?

Grab a screwdriver and fight back with some easy home repairs that will raise your spirits and get your home ready for spring.
Accomplishments, even little ones, can go a long way towards a sunny outlook. Fortunately, there are plenty of easy and quick home repairs you can do when your are in the thick of winter.

In each room, look around and take stock of what needs fixing or improving. Focus on the small, quick-fix changes, not the major redos. Small household problems can have big effects.

Here are a couple of good starting points:

  • Squeaky Door HindgesSpray a little WD-40 onto the hinges, moving the door back and forth to work in the lubricant. Or try rubbing the hinges with petroleum jelly. If these tricks don’t work, lift the hinge pins about halfway and lubricate them with three-in-one oil, using a rag to catch drips.
  • Creaking Floors For a temporary fix, sprinkle talcum powder over the noisy area and sweep it into the cracks. Be sure to remove any traces of powder if you’re ever going to refinish the floor.
  • Stained Tub - Combine equal amounts of cream of tartar and baking soda with enough lemon juice to make a paste. Rub the mixture into the stain with your fingers or a soft cloth. Let sit for a half hour, then rinse well with water.
Tackling these smaller projects will give you the confidence and motivation to move up to bigger ones on your list.

10 Basement Clutter Clearing Tips

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind?

Our basements can all too easily become a dumping ground for every piece of junk and clutter we think we might need someday, or just don't want to make a decision about right now. Plus, this space is often one of the largest storage areas in your home.

Put these two facts together and you can easily accumulate a mountain of stuff in this space, to the point where finding anything is nearly impossible.

Here are 10 tips for clearing out your basement and maximizing your storage space.

Take a deep breath and dive in!

1. Spread Out Your Stuff — Are you staring at lots of boxes of stuff? Empty each one out into the middle of the room. It will force you to go through everything and make a decision.

2. Pile, Pile, Pile  Create separate piles and label them. KEEP. DONATE. RECYCLE. TRASH.

3. Deal With It  As you clear out, touch every single item. No leaving anything for "later." Deal with each and every item as you pick it up - decide to keep it, donate it or toss it.

4. Everything In It's Place — Separate the “keep” pile into new categories — craft supplies, toys, sports equipment, ect. Assign each category a location, tuck craft supplies in clear plastic bins and stack them on a shelf. Send sports equipment to a sturdy bin in the garage. Label everything!

5. Work On It Every Day — Even if it’s just for 20 minutes. Every bit of time adds up, and it’s less overwhelming than caging yourself down there for hours at a time.

6. Ditch The Cardboard Boxes — Don’t use cardboard boxes for storage in your basement. They crumple, dent and they don’t protect items from dampness. Instead, use sturdy, preferably clear plastic containers. Clear containers will help you to best find what you need when you need it.

7. A Dumpster Is Your Best Friend — Have one ready in the driveway. Every item out of your basement and into the dumpster is a small victory.

8. Take Breaks — When indecision sets in, you need to walk away for a bit. You’ll come back with a fresh perspective and renewed energy.

9. Shelve It — Shelves are important in a basement declutter, since you’ll need to keep your valuables safe from flooding. Metal shelving is affordable and easy to assemble, and it withstands heat and humidity better than wood.

10. Hang It Up — Use hooks and pegs to store items up off the floor, freeing more space.

Use these great starting points to whip your storage space into shape!

6 Ways To Get Your Kids More Involved In Home Cleanup

As February break draws near and ideas to occupy uncharted free time are slim, here are some tips to getting the kids involved cleaning up around the house. Ask any parent the cause of their home clutter. Their near-universal answer: the children. Children have a unique gift for leaving a path of disaster in their wake. And just as universal is a child’s dislike of cleaning up. Too often pleas to clean up fall on deaf ears.Requests for children to spend time tidying up or decluttering can devolve into a shouting match with tears flowing and threats of punishment flying. And if the work gets done, chances are everyone leaves a little unhappier. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Whether it’s cleaning a room or cleaning out the house there are some strategies for getting kids to participate in the process.

Here's a look at six strategies to make the process run smooth for everyone!

Build Habits Early
When it comes to forming habits, repetition creates comfort. Habits are also developed from a young age. When it comes to good habits such as being organized or just simply cleaning up after themselves, consistency is key. If you start kids at a young age and keep things fun, they'll enjoy pitching in — it gives them a great sense of accomplishment, collaboration, independence and responsibility.

Set A Specific Time Frame
One of the beauties (or frustrations) of human language is how so much meaning can be packed into so few words. We hear what we want to hear, so vague language can and will be interpreted in a way that benefits the hearer — your kids — in a way that means they don’t have to do the work or at least not right away. Turn “Clean your room” into “Clean your room by tomorrow at 3 p.m.” Setting expectations are important.

Make Cleanup Fun
One great tactic for motivating kids to clean the house is turning it into a game, because kids want to win and be proud of themselves. Turning the cleanup process into a game makes it a bit more palatable to a child’s mind. (Maybe your budding young Kevin Durant or Kobe Bryant can see how many “shots” he can land in the rental dumpster!

Add Music
Make it a cleaning party! Music can serve as an enormous motivator. Things we don’t like to do become a little easier when we have music we enjoy while we’re doing them. Put some tunes on the stereo and let it blare throughout the house!

Take It One Step At A Time
It takes years to amass the clutter that overtakes many homes. Expecting it to disappear in one afternoon is unrealistic — and sets you up for disappointment.
Tackle one chunk of the clutter at a time… together! That might mean ordering a dumpster bin more than once, but it’s a far more manageable process and far less daunting a task than demanding the entire cleaning take place in a single day.

Show Your Appreciation
From an early age we remind our kids to say the magic words, "please" and "thank you." It's important as parents that we remember to use them too! Sure those simple words may not be enough to turn surly kids into happy household tidiers. Another great form of motivation... bribes. Maybe offering a little something extra such as an allowance, an extended curfew, or even a special experience is enough to spark their interest.
