Clutter can play a significant role in how we feel about our homes, our workplaces, and ourselves. Messy homes and work spaces can leave you feeling anxious, helpless, and overwhelmed. It can also make it more difficult to relax, both physically and mentally. Yet clutter is rarely recognized as a significant source of stress in our lives.
Here are a few ideas to get you started on your way to a clutter and stress-free environment:
1. Try tackling your next de-cluttering project as a family. If clutter has invaded your entire house, don't tackle the job alone. Get the whole family involved by starting with a room everyone uses and making each person responsible for a section. If you're on your own, start with one area at a time and finish de-cluttering that area before moving on to another. This will give you a sense of accomplishment as you see your successes little by little.
2. If you don't use it, don't want it, or don't need it, get rid of it. You can toss it, recycle it, or donate it, but don't keep it. If you use it, but only rarely, store it in a box in the garage to leave easy-access space for things you use more often. The best part of throwing your unwanted items into one of our dumpsters is knowing that it will be properly recycled at a local transfer station facility.
3. Organize your garage like another room in the home. Your home may only seem organized because you're using your garage as a dump site. The same storage solutions you use inside your home can be integrated into the garage too. Using shelving, cubbies, and hooks will leave your garage with room to spare. Organizing this space will help to tame the clutter in both the garage and inside your home, you may even be able to park the car in there next winter as a side benefit!
